The whippet has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a racing dog among the coal miners and industrial workers of the North of England in the 19th. century to reach the heady heights of Best In Show at Crufts and Westminster. Registration statistics relating to 2006 reveal the increasing popularity of the breed being the 21st. in registrations (2,672) in the United Kingdom , 61st. in the U.S.A with 1,836 and 895 registrations in France. The whippet`s popularity is due to its size, short hair and gentle temperament in addition to its sporting activities ( racing and coursing) although, as in most other dog breeds, there are now differences between the show dog and the working dog.
